The nun, the infidel & the superman

Shaw called her "an enclosed nun with an unenclosed mind" and although Dame Laurentia McLachlan, Abbess of Stanbrook, passed 70 of her 87 years within the strictly enclosed convent in Worcestershire, she was a person without frontiers. Her friendships ranged from the very outspoken George Bernard Shaw, the very Roman Catholic Cardinal Gasquet and the very Anglican Canon Wilson to the agnostic Sydney Cockerell and the little Italian prisoner-of-war employed on the Abbey farm.
