This is Doris Lessing's first novel since "The fifth child" in 1988. Sarah Durham, both a theatrical producer and an old woman, commissions a play based of the journals of Julie Vairon, a nineteenth century "free woman" living under the protection of her lover in Provence. Everyone involved in the project is challenged by the experience.
